NYCE Cruise – Seattle Yacht Club Opening Day Weekend

Opening Day at the Seattle Yacht Club is one of the great boating traditions of the Pacific Northwest and marks the official start of the boating season in Seattle. Each year hundreds of boats gather in Portage Bay and the Montlake Cut for a weekend of races, ceremonies, and the famous Opening Day Boat Parade.

The event dates back more than a century and remains one of the largest boating celebrations in the Pacific Northwest.

Our Opening Day coordinator and cruise captain is Becky Latimer (m/v Wavelet 2,  mvwavelet@gmail.com ☎️ 281 813 0180), who handles the group moorage arrangements and registration with Seattle Yacht Club.

As Commodore, I wanted to share some information for those of you who have not experienced the spectacle yet.  This will hopefully serve to heighten enthusiasm and as food for thought and invite thoughtful questions about anything I may have missed.  Feel free to ask me or Becky, if you have any questions.

Arrival and Dock Zero

Dock Zero typically opens to visiting boats Wednesday at noon, which is when I plan to arrive with Blue Heaven. I’ll bring BH through the Ballard Locks the weekend prior to avoid the Opening Day rush and enjoy a few of our fresh-water reciprocals around Lake Union and Lake Washington.

Dock Zero becomes our neighborhood for the week. Boats arrive one by one, flags and canopies appear, dock chairs emerge, and the dock gradually fills with friends, stories, and laughter as the weekend builds toward Friday and Saturday. It’s a fantastic place to meet other visiting yacht clubs and soak up the atmosphere as Opening Day approaches.

Moorage Notes

Dock Zero is assembled each year using a temporary floating dock. Most boats moor using a Mediterranean-style (stern-to-dock) arrangement to fit the hundreds of participating boats. Some larger vessels may stern-tie with anchors set off the bow to add stability. Don’t worry if this is new to you—experienced volunteers, including our own Becky and Glenn, will be on hand to help with docking and make sure everyone is comfortably settled.

Opening Day Week at SYC

Seattle Yacht Club hosts activities throughout the week leading up to Saturday’s main events. During Opening Day week you’ll find boats gathering in Portage Bay, visiting yacht clubs arriving at the docks, and the club’s Concierge Tent open Wednesday through Friday to help visiting boaters navigate the festivities.

The big day is Saturday, which includes several signature traditions:

Commissioning Ceremony – 8:45 AM

Held on the SYC lawn, this ceremony formally begins the boating season.

Windermere Cup Crew Races – Starting about 10:15 AM

International rowing teams race from Lake Washington through the Montlake Cut to Portage Bay.

Opening Day Boat Parade – Noon

At noon the Montlake Bridge lifts and the cannon fires, signaling the start of the parade through the Montlake Cut. Decorated vessels of every description pass thousands of spectators lining the shore.

The parade typically continues through the afternoon before the Cut reopens to normal traffic around 4:00 PM.

Evening celebrations follow with trophy presentations and closing ceremonies on the SYC lawn.

Drive-Ins Welcome

Even if you’re not bringing your boat to Dock Zero, you’re warmly encouraged to drive in and join us.

Great times to visit include:

• Friday afternoon and evening dock parties

• Saturday morning ceremonies and crew races

• The Opening Day parade at noon

Dock Zero will be easy to find — walk through the SYC parking lot south towards the 520 bridge and keep going onto the wooden temporary dock. Turn right at the tee-junction. Walk west through the assembled boats and look for the NYCE canopy, burgees and familiar faces enjoying the festivities.

Saturday Evening Traditions

Many of our group attend the Saturday evening Ward Room dinner with the Midshipmen, a longstanding club tradition and a highlight of the weekend.

Sunday – Mark Meyer Opening Day Race

I plan to stick around Sunday and participate in the Mark Meyer Opening Day Race, a fun way to wrap up the weekend on the water.

If any NYCE sailors would like to join the race or crew aboard Blue Heaven, you’re very welcome.

Helpful Tips for First-Timers

• Arrive early if you plan to boat in — traffic through the Locks gets busy Friday (and Sunday for departure).  If your schedule allows early arrival and/or late departure from fresh water, you’ll spend far less time waiting.

• Bring enough fenders and your lock lines — Dock Zero space is tight, with most boats stern-tied. Occasionally lock lines are required; you’ll need 50-foot lines to hand to the lock staff. Have them ready.

• Decorations are encouraged whether you plan to enter the parade or just celebrate the theme from dock zero. Feel free to costume yourself, and your boat, for the Friday shenanigans!

Opening Day is one of those uniquely Seattle maritime traditions — a mix of boating, history, and dockside camaraderie.  If you’ve never experienced it before, it’s well worth adding to your cruising log.

Whether you arrive by boat or drive in for the festivities, we hope you’ll stop by Dock Zero, find the NYCE burgees, and say hello.
